One of the most common emergency situations faced by dog owners in particular is the cut pad or paw.

A sharp piece of glass or metal in the undergrowth can easily cause a deep and nasty cut, and when dog’s paws are cut, they tend to bleed an awful lot!

In a situation like this you have got two main priorities. Firstly you need to try and stop the bleeding as much as you can and secondly you need to get straight down to your vets a.s.a.p.

To try and get the bleeding under control, take off both of your socks. Pull one over the bleeding paw, and use the other to tie the first sock securely in place. If possible, pass the second sock around the area where the cut is so it applies firm direct pressure to the wound. Then call your vets to let them know you are on your way, and get straight down there without delay.

A dog has repaid the couple who rescued him from a shelter six years ago by rousing them in the night to let them know their baby had stopped breathing. Duke is being credited with saving the life of nine-week-old baby Harper after he dashed into her parents’ bedroom, in Portland, Connecticut, when he noticed that something was wrong on Sunday night. The dog, which was taken in by the Brousseau family six years ago, jumped on the couple’s bed and began shaking uncontrollably, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Read more:

A Labrador has been dubbed ‘Sherlock Hounds’ after solving dozens of crimes by sniffing out hundreds of pounds worth of stolen goods while out on his morning walks.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Archie has dug up stolen purses, wallets, handbags and jewellery that have been discarded in woodland after muggings and robberies.

Over the past eight months Archie’s owner Debbie Linnane has handed over hundreds of pounds worth of items to the police who have been able to reunite them with their rightful owners.

Chocolate Labrador Archie – now better known by his nickname Sherlock – has dug up a treasure trove of items using his sharp sense of smell while on his morning walks in Bretton Park, Peterborough.

Owner Debbie, 54, said: ‘In the past eight months alone he has found a handbag, a wallet and a ladies’ purse, along with other items such as sports equipment.

‘We have just been walking in Bretton Park near the dyke, when he runs off and disappears, before bringing the items back to me.

‘He has had no training at all, so it is a bit of a surprise he does it.

‘I have taken all the items to the police station.

‘I am not sure whether police managed to track down the owners of all the items but the owner of one purse phoned back to say thank you.

‘Apparently money had been taken from the purse, but all her cards were still in there, but it seems like she had been the victim of a robbery.

‘It was nice we were able to return her property.

‘Archie must have found hundreds of pounds worth of items over the past few months.

‘We call Archie ‘Sherlock Hounds’ now, he has got a real nose for valuables.’

Archie’s special talent also comes in handy at Debbie’s home – especially when the TV remote control has gone missing.
